Every Year 250,000 Horseshoe Crabs ‘Donate’ Their Blue Blood to Save Humans”Do you give much thought to horseshoe crabs? No, me neither. But it turns out that without them, we could be in a very precarious position. Horseshoe crabs – or to be more precise, their incredible, baby blue blood – are used to test for bacterial contamination, thus saving countless lives each year during medical procedures. The only trouble is, we have to catch a quarter of a million horseshoe crabs each year to do this, and then we have to drain their blood.”

Meet The 14-Year-Old Girl Who Developed A Low-Cost Water Purification System | FastCompany
The next generation of scientists is already hard at work solving our biggest problems. Take Deepika Kurup, a 14-year-old high school student from Nashua, New Hampshire. After seeing children in India drinking dirty water from a stagnant pool, she decided, in her words, “to find a solution to the global water crisis.” And then she actually made some progress towards that goal, developing a solar-powered water purification system.

She is the future

It’s summer, and we all know we should be wearing sunscreen every day. It’s easy to forget to slather on, I know, but you don’t want to end up looking like a leather saddle by the end of summer. This SPF coconut body oil uses the natural sunscreen protection in oil and extracts to combine moisturizer and sunscreen in one step. Add your favorite essential oils and you can skip the perfume, too!

Body oil is especially nice to use in the summer. Apply after you shower and it quickly absorbs into the skin without feeling heavy or cakey like lotion. To make a moisturizing body oil, start with a base of coconut or almond oil (SPF of between 5-8) and add in avocado oil (natural SPF of 15). This body oil gives you basic summer protection, nice when wearing tank tops and shorts, but shouldn’t be used in place of sunscreen.

To bump up your body oil SPF, add red raspberry seed oil or carrot seed oilBoth have naturally very high SPFs because the vitamin A, vitamin E and fatty acids they contain are at just the right balance to protect against UV rays. Red raspberry seed oil has a natural SPF of around 30 and carrot seed oil provides SPF 40 protection.

Find the SPF Coconut Body Oil recipe here.

I made my own mix using coconut oil, avocado oil, carrot seed oil and whatever else I had laying around..I’ve been using it when going to the beach and I love it! My tan looks great and I don’t burn (not that I usually do anyways).. Carrot seed oil is a summer must :)

Breaking via ABC News: UN Human Rights Council votes to open inquiry into alleged war crimes in Gaza; U.S. is the ONLY “no” vote.
That’s because the U.S. is a direct accomplice to every war crime that Israel commits.

I’m also intrigued by which countries voted “abstain.” Weird how the EU doesn’t seem to want to get involved …
